Lot 043 Mr. Donaldson
This lot will be sold in three parts. Untitled Nº69 A chirographic drawing in black procion dye and red pencil on Fabriano Accademia paper. Signed, ‘Suitable for framing’. Untitled Nº74 A chirographic drawing in black procion dye and red pencil on Fabriano Accademia paper. Signed, ‘Suitable for framing’. An augmented copy of ‘Shapes for sounds’ This book is exactly the same as run-of-the-mill copies that can be found in any respectable design bookshop, with the exception of corresponding characters from the 'Meta' conjectural alphabet written in red crayon on each chart and the author's flamboyant signature on the half-title page. Mr Donaldson is concerned with the ancient and ubiquitous art of ‘sending messages with words and pictures’, particularly the words. His continuing investigations with pre-fabricated, experimental letters in the form of conjectural and commercial typeface design is widely documented, as are lectures, performances and installations examining the scale and nature of the act of writing. The deep, interconnected involvement of typographic communication in our modern lives leads him to question the teaching and understanding of the history and development of the alphabet and its impact on modern typographic communication, the cognitive aspects of current orthography, the status of writing in secular and artistic life and its role and prospects for the future. http://www.timothydonaldson.com/ |
